He was a "Together" guy. He was patient, excellent with finances, loved cruises, did everything he could to make his daughters happy. He was a snazzy dresser too. This photo was taken at Belle Isle in Detroit and I would bet his slacks were sharkskin. Even on the grill he was a sharp dresser.

https://twocables.blogspot.com/2010/07/better-place.html

Enjoy the rest of your Weekend !

Two Cables and a Frapphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02873472844984523487noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648370582749509053.post-55618713593853349802020-06-20T09:33:00.002-04:002020-06-20T09:33:38.438-04:00PlansSome crafting has been going on around here but not a lot. I've been coloring and working on my Afghan and these socks. These are house socks made from worsted yarn on size US 4s. I didn't bother to block them because I wore them right away. I have yarn already for another pair.

Plans

This weekend I plan on taking a serious look at my WIPs as well as potential new projects.

Emails and Messages

A few posts ago I touched on the confusion and unrest that's going on in the world. Well, somehow that post offended a few people. Comments were made that they were not going to follow My blog any longer because a craft blog was not the place to talk about anything other than crafts. This cracked me up. Another person stopped commenting and following me altogether. Ohhkay. I find all of this to be very sad and not commenting on my blog, not following my blog is not a punishment to me but really ladies, take a look at yourself.

Oh well. The book is included in Oprah's Book Club which I stopped following over a decade ago. Most of the books were good quality reading but boring as in dead boring. An American Marriage however has been endorsed by Michelle Obama so I'm in. My dilemma has been whether to Kindle it or get the actual book.

I am grateful to my friend's Facebook post this morning stating that she was watching the Unsung episode on Minnie Riperton. This helped me seeing as for over the last week I kept the television running on MSNBC and CNN. For some reason I need to know every single detail of the virus, the Michigan flooding, the George Floyd killing, the Minneapolis riot, Trump's careless comments all of it I need to stay in tune with it all. I'm happy to say I'm watching Unsung with a bit of knitting.

How I'm seeing this craziness

My friends and neighbors have asked me how I keep so disciplined staying in all the time without even sitting on the porch. There is no need to explain since they have chosen to stop social distancing. Staying in doesn't bother me. My Mom in Michigan has been down about all of the people that have passed from the virus and are still passing. It has helped that my daughter speaks with her a couple times a day. They are close and look forward to each other's conversations.

This may sound funny or corny but I would say my attitude towards what's going on with the world right now has to do with the history of my reading. In the mid-80s I became an avid science fiction reader but before that I was a Stephen King and Peter Straub fan. So the strangeness of what we're going through globally is not so strange to me. It all feels familiar. Has anyone noticed how many deaths of band members and character actors there have been ? These are not people that you would know right off but after a while you're like "Oh yea, I remember". There have been loads of them and not all have passed from the virus. No one can say for sure but is it possible that had the officer responsible for George Floyd's death been arrested immediately perhaps there may have been No riot or much less of a riot. So after the riot began they decided to arrest the officer. Very poor decision ! the fact that social distancing is being viewed by many as an imposition and a violation of civil rights instead of the government trying to protect people. What about instead of seeing masks as a necessary protection they have become a political issue. It doesn't help that Trump just won't quit with his careless words. Thank goodness no one really takes him seriously. What about the flood in Midland, Michigan ? As a Michigander I'm here to tell you that waters may rise but we never flood especially to that capacity. How about it was reported that children were not affected by the virus then they were then a few passed then the virus has now been connected to the Kawaski disease. All of this to show us for the millionth time that the scientists have made no headway with the virus. There are just so many things that are happening at once. It all feels Stephen Kingy, science fictiony to me. We will probably never know the reason but there is a reason why this is happening. It is above our heads and not meant for us to know.

.

.

Projects

I'm still working on my Granny Striped afghan. At some point in the day the knitting needles have been in my hands and I have accomplished rows. Like these socks I completed months ago. I made them then tossed them to the side. I don't need them I just needed the therapy they provided. I have a small pile of FOs that simply need to be posted. Not just posted they need to be presentable and posted. Measuring the satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment in regards to making versus posting an object for me the making wins.

There is no pattern just shortie socks out of mini-skeins. My daughter has expressed a desire to have them. She may have them as long as she keeps the promise not to put them in the dryer.

The Encounter

I am fortunate to have such a great team of medical personnel to come in and work with me. I have excellent physical therapists, occupational therapists, LPNs and RNs. I am impressed and pleased with them all. Last week I received a call from an aide telling me that she was assigned to visit me. I wondered what her purpose was because as far as I was concerned I was covered. I would ask more questions when she arrived. ~ The aide didn't knock and announce herself instead she knocked and entered. I was totally unprepared for that which left me scrambling for my face mask. She had a mask attached to her ears but didn't have it on. "You're suppose to have your mask on." I told her. The aide then begin to cough and the already alarmed me stared at her. Then unbelievably after her coughing she pulled her mask down. Inside I had a fit and asked her why she removed the mask. The aide looked dumb-founded. Then I noticed she had no gloves on. Where are your gloves ? "Oh, I don't wear them in people's homes.". I thanked her for coming then called the hospital and ask that they never, ever send that worker to me again ! My mind put her in a slot of "Those". You know, those people that refuse to wear masks or wash hands, that hang out in lines shoulder to shoulder as if they don't know what social distancing is. Yep. She was one of those. Bye bye Those !

I don't have a lot planned for the weekend except a bit of reading and organizing a few things.

Enjoy !

Two Cables and a Frapphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02873472844984523487noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648370582749509053.post-76344206729178352020-05-23T12:07:00.001-04:002020-05-23T12:07:16.819-04:00I was doing All the Things !Well, almost all of the things. I have been busy for the past few weeks with crafts, reading and doing things to challenge my brain. I have a daily-theme crossword app that I visit every day. It's not a tough crossword puzzle by any means but I'm learning trivia and I love trivia !

Long Overdue

I am years overdue for making an afghan. Every January I tell myself "For sure I'm making an afghan...) I started this Granny Striped Blanket the other day and it's fun. I found several skeins of acrylic yarns in my stash that were sort of in the same color scheme so why not. There is no rhyme or reason to my matching these stripes. This blanket will strictly go by my mood or vibes and I will hook it as I see fit. Instead of doing two rows and changing colors I'm going to change if and when I feel like making a change. Not much about this Afghan will be uniform. It's going to be very hodgy-podgy.

I was inspired by Lefty-Crafter by her Lapgham post to try a motif. I love motifs so I thought I would try. One try turned into one type then another then another until I laid the yarn down. One actually came out pretty decent but I was still not satisfied. I will try another day. Practice makes perfect.

On Books

I'm the last two weeks I have read one book, one novella and listened to a relatively short audiobook. The first book The Dreamers was amazing. The writing was pretty good, the development of the characters and their lives was pretty good. A couple of my friends had recommended the book to me without really telling me about the book. Guess what. It's about a pandemic but the virus is more of a sleep virus. That alone hooked me to the story. So much of the author's pandemic is like the pandemic we are going through. Karen Thompson Walker covered her pandemic well. It is an interesting read and I would recommend this book especially since it is not a long one to get through.

Midnight Son I would recommend to anyone. This short story is set in Alaska and is about a native named Teddy Smith that had branched away from what his town was use to. Teddy Smith actually got into show business and was respected by his town until an unfortunate event happens. Teddy is not the main character but the the author is. James Dommek jr. who sets out to find out exactly what happened with Teddy Smith that caused Smith to get into trouble. James Dommek jr. investigates and interviews everyone that he can as he is seeking the spiritual and non-spiritual explanation of the incident. I won't say anymore except this story holds my heart and is definitely worth reading.

So Long Lollipop was a Kindle book that was given to me for free. I will accept almost any free book even if it isn't what I usually read. The story is relatively short, well written and about zombies. If you're into zombies I would recommend this one. it's typical in that the human characters are always fighting the zombies. This is the first part of Ms. Fleming's zombie series. I hope to find another interesting read this weekend.

Coloring

As an adult getting back into coloring I feel new to it. The intrigue began a couple of years ago with the Granny Striped Blanket on Instagram. The majority of people were using mini-skeins and the projects were so pretty ! I found mini-skeins on Etsy of course. I don't know why certain things need to make sense to me but I did not understand the mis-match sets of mini-skeins. The sets would have something like three skeins with green in them then the next few skeins might be a orange and black, another might be grey and blue. I could not make myself buy any sets because of they were so mis-matched. I noticed that some of the knitting Youtubers would have an entire shelf or big basket of what looked to be over 100 mini-skeins. Loads and loads of unmatched, mis-matchy mini-skeins. I watched one knitter's shelf for almost 20 episodes and the skeins never moved then I figured they must be for decoration. Okay. I can see that. Funny thing when she needed particular colors for a project she had to order more mini-skeins since none of her skeins were suited for the project. I think at some point mini-skeins were a fad. I do remember when many were trading mini-skeins for projects. That had to be lots of fun. Sometimes the prices are a bit scary for the packets though. I ran across a seller who had five skein packs for $55.00. This morning I came across a set of 24 mini-skeins that were matched pretty well but the price was close to $200.00 ! When you divide it up it makes sense but my goodness ! Who would ever think that a person (me) would be so anal about little bundles of yarn ? I resolved my issues with the mis-matchy packs though. Now I purchase singles. You can get the exact colors that you want. I have bought a few sets that I am really happy with though. By the way. What's your relationship with mini-skeins ? Do you use them ? Finding them useful ?

These are not mine. I have been home from the hospital for over a week now recuperating I guess and trying to get use to how my life has changed so suddenly. I'm wrapping my mind around it all but keeping in mind of who I am. I am Carolyn the woman who is a strong and positive woman. I've been fighting battles since I was a girl so I am not unfamiliar with obstacles. I can do this. I have to do this...

I'm the meantime...

My WIP this week is another pair of gloves providing there is enough yarn for fingers otherwise they may be fingerless or those with the chopped off this of fingers. We shall see. I said I was not going to make another pair without a pattern but I had an idea you see. If I make another pair this year I will do an actual pattern. A couple of posts ago I showed this yarn in color. It's really pretty and a very bright orange. This time around I just couldn't get the photo right. Between the Orange looking a neon and the shadows I decided to post this without color. I have a goal to complete these by Sunday, Monday,Tuesday...

I must say Son and Daughter-in-law are giving my little Grands a lovely life. Since the birth of my first grand in 2016 I've been sent photos, updates and videos sometimes daily and for sure weekly. Though they live across the United States they have brought great joy to me. I adore them. My Son works a lot of hours but as soon as he gets home he is reading to them. Most mornings before he wakes the Grands spend time on the sofa going through their favorite books. So cute ! It's like a book club for toddlers.

Their home has acreage so my Grands love all nature. There are horse farms down the road.
Georgia was number #2 with Covid illnesses and possible deaths in the U.S.A but now since Governed Kemp lifted the quarantine order other states are now following with opening back up. Tough times for those whose livelihood are small businesses. Georgia had so many successful businesses that are being destroyed and all things are faltering for them. Over the last week CNN was doing reports on various salons, spas, hair salons and restaurants questioning the safety precautions set for the guests coming in. Nothing they said was good enough for me and unfortunately the days of dining out, going to get the hair and nails done going to spa are all luxuries at this point. For us these things are not essentials but for the businesses it is their bread and butter. This makes me so sad because no matter what people will begin to have their cars repossessed and their homes foreclosed upon. I have been seeing solicitations by Bankruptcy attorneys telling people to use their stimulus checks to file bankruptcy. I have thoughts on this of course but times are crazy and even though my family and I are fine I must get too upset about the financial destruction of others. Heartbreaking.
Since the last week in February I have hardly set foot even on the front porch to avoid Covid. Wouldn't ya' know that I not only had to leave the house but had to be admitted into the hospital last night. So much for my quarantine plan. I'm here for a non-covid ailment. I'm in a non-covid building / area and was told there are only 10 patients on this floor. I haven't seen one patient only staff. This place is like a ghost town. The breakfast was ghastly but my lunch of Masala Chicken, steamed asparagus and mashed potatoes was primo ! I love the professionalism of this place and they have really good coffee. Everyone seems so happy which makes the stay easier.
The Conversation with My Physician

My original appointment was around the end of February. I rescheduled for the next week then rescheduled again and again then called to say I would call them when I was coming in. The receptionist picked up on something when I asked her what were they doing about the patients that cough in the lobby and treatment room. When I thought about the question later I had to admit that it was a strange one but the receptionist told me the front office staff and nurses were working on getting ahead of the coughing patients. I didn't know what that meant exactly and didn't ask. I was just happy to get out of the appointment again. The next day my physician called to ask how I was doing. I confessed to him that I had not been outside for almost a month and was afraid to go to his office because someone is always coughing. There are many nurses and many patients in his building and since my immune system is not the strongest right now I will not be visiting his office. I apologized about the cancellations. He told me he didn't care about the cancellations he just wanted to make sure that I was okay and to make sure I had everything I needed because he could have someone pick up whatever I wanted and drop it off. The man is gold. He told me that I was being smart and should continue staying home. What's really interesting is that he says they are working on cutting back appointments in hopes of having no patients scheduled in the next week or so. Wow.

I hope the next time I post this coloring page it will be completed. Ya' know, I think adult coloring is harder than a child coloring. It's certainly not carefree. Not for me anyway. I want as close to perfection as possible and that takes a lo of color planning and patience.
Wip

This week I started a fair isle hat. It's the Schuyler hat which is not such a popular pattern but it's free, out of worsted yarn and on a size US 7 needle. The hat has been going fast and smooth. I'm using the same yarns as I did for my fair isle gloves. Just testing my patience again...
These are for me. Yes. I'm claiming them right now. The fair isle patterns are ideas from various charts. Again I did not use a pattern so when I reached the thumb insertion I became intimidated and confused. With that one of my thumbs is a little wonky. I plan on taking it down and redoing it. I've been using 12 stitches for each finger but around 15-16 for the thumb which is about 2 or 3 stitches too many. It makes a difference. I don't know how soon I'll make another pair but I do know it will be by pattern. In fact I plan on reading through a few glove patterns for self improvement.
These were done on US 4s with Patons Classic Wool. The skein was around 219 yards but I used approximately 200 yards. The contrasting yarn was a scrap from my stash. I have no idea what it was.
After this pair I will give the glove making a rest. I feel pretty confident so the next pair I make will be with a pattern and more of a challenge. It will take patience but I need to be able to follow a pattern. I've been having fun with this.
Plans and Improvements III

I am probably the last knitter on earth that had not tried magic loop. I found it to be interesting but I'm not sure whether it will take the place of my dpns altogether. I know of more than a few knitters that put down their dpns altogether after trying magic loop. I'm working on perfecting the method as I had a few rows with ladder like stitches on the end. It seems faster but I'm not even sure of that. This may sound strange but dpn knitting is deliberate and spiritual for me so I will more than likely use both methods depending on the yarn and/or pattern I use. At this point I'm about 35% sold on magic loop. In time it will grow on me I'm sure.
My gloves are completed ! They are mine and I'm not giving them away. I don't think. Hmmm...

This is the second or third pair I've ever made in my life and it's been over 10 years since. I am happy with these but the same little issues I had before I still have because I stopped making them when I needed to make more. Practice makes perfect. Practice. Practice. Practice...
March is here already ! 2020 is flying by.

I haven't posted anything in the past couple of weeks due to my being under the weather. I didn't have a cough nor was I sneezing but I had plenty of body aches, an occasional headache and a slight fever three times. This went on for about six days then those symptoms were over all at once. I am in recuperation mode now which means I am exhausted. Rest is key at this point. I visited my favorite blogs a few times but couldn't keep up and comment. I'm feeling better now so I will work on catching up. I wasn't able to get a lot of knitting done and what I worked on was fairly simple. I'm so happy to be feeling better.

I plan to make more gloves and to improve my glove making

Mittens are cute but I absolutely love gloves. Every year I plan to make myself a pair but that plan is always set aside. Well, not this year. I shall have gloves ! I did not use a pattern so these will be very basic. They're looking pretty ugly right now but I know I'm going to love them.

I had the beginning of a sweater and a couple of shawls as WIPs but couldn't concentrate on the stitch work so I ended up starting the gloves since which are pretty much a mindless knit. After I complete them I'll go back to my WIPs. Talk about life getting in the way. That short period of being ill threw me off but I'm all better now. Back to my agenda.

For some reason it was never a big deal to me, my family or circle of friends. It feels funny when I meet people that make such a big deal of Valentine's day. I don't judge I just wonder why I missed out on all that fun and enthusiasm for the holiday. It was a big deal in elementary school though because we were allowed to pass those cute cheesy cards to our friends. I remember our homeroom teacher giving us a box of candy hearts which I tried to make last the rest of the school day. It never worked.

The receptionist Denise at my physician's office absolutely loved her socks. A couple of days ago I received this nice card in the mail.

Remember when there were no laptops and we didn't really type letters unless they were long letters or the letter was a professional one. We use to hand write them in ink with hardly any mistakes. I promised myself in 2019 to start writing letters in cursive again. I sent off one a couple weeks ago and my friend loved it. She told me that writing letters is a lost art. I hope after writing a few letters that my friends are inspired to "write" me back.

I don't have much to show in the way of projects for January but I did get a lot of knitting done. I worked on large sweater pieces, the bulk of a shawl which was all garter, a bit of cable on socks and a few other things. I hope I can have some of those posted this month.

It was all in the way I was picking my stitches up. I finally took the time and effort to not be in such a hurry. It made a difference with this pair. Success so far and it will only get better !

This sock by the way is for the receptionist in my physician's office. She asked me if I would make her a pair and I could not turn her down. She has always been sweet to me. I have seemed her knit-worthy.
I made a shawlette last year and enjoyed it's versatility which made me go into my closet to pull out other shawls and cowls. They feel so nice and give a completion to whatever outfit I'm wearing if that makes sense. Wearing shawls and cowls give me the feeling of being hugged all day.

I started with on a shawlette this morning and I can't wait to be hugged by it.
My Craft World

I don't have much to report this week in terms of crafting. I've been working on a few Wips but nothing significant really. Next week I should have something to show.

It's been a few years since I crocheted something. I see cute crocheted projects, I see how advanced the patterns for crocheting is now and how makers are even using good yarns for crocheting not just acrylics like we used when I was crocheting. In terms of working with yarn I started out crocheting but after picking up knitting I never went back. When I crocheted the patterns weren't that much of a challenge. Knitting has always given me some type of challenge. Crochet or not I did fall in love with this little hat. I mean who wouldn't love it and besides, it will be perfect for my latest grandson. It's the Aviator Hat by Sarah Zimmerman. I would call it an easy peasy project.

Where did Your Crafting begin ?

I'm not referring to the projects they had us do in Art class in school. I'm talking about the crafting and creativity that came from you. I think I must have been about 8 years old when I first started making clothes for my Barbie dolls. I wasn't using material but tissue or napkins and tape. I would use the tissue as the material then tape together the design. My Dad was the first one that noticed what I was doing and he was amazed and impressed. He went up to Woolworth and purchased needle, thread and remnants for me. He kept my supply up for me. I was only interested in creating doll clothes nothing else and as time passed my friends began requesting that I make their dolls clothes also. they paid me (.50) but because we were kids the pay was never good.

In Junior High I became friends with a family of girls who were into crocheting. No one could really teach me how because I was left handed but somehow I learned on my own. I spent many weekends over their house making scarves with the occasional hat. On a daring day we would attempt to crochet flowers. Crocheting was so simple back then. One of my friend's older sisters named Vicky was better at it than we were. She used these exact pamphlets to make vests. Would you believe she sold them for $5.00 a piece. That was around 1971 and even then I thought the price was a bargain.
Thinking back to those days of my group and I being teens in the 70s gathering to crochet and craft I don't know whether that was a common thing or not. It certainly does not seem to be common these days. We were definitely a special group of young ladies.

So where did your crafting begin and what was the craft ? Was it something you began by yourself like I did or was it a craft you did with your family. I would love to hear about it.
The Conversation in My Head...

what is your true definition of an impulse purchase ? Is it something that you think you like at that moment so you purchase it ? Is it buying something because you're in the store and have to buy something ? The determining factor or me to label an item an impulse buy is whether I keep the item. In my younger years I was the queen of impulse buying but as time went on I hardly ever impulse but anything. The reason I'm talking about impulse buying is because after the purchase of these Green Mountain Spinnery yarn I questioned myself. I was watching a podcast and the hostess made a shawl out of this yarn in the denim color (mine's is the same but the photo looks a bit green). I said to myself I must have that shawl in that yarn ! I found the yarn then ordered it in pink also then decided that I didn't want the blue yarn in that shawl. I would find another pattern. I'm checking myself you see to make sure I didn't slip into an impulse purchase. Had I purchased the shawl pattern that would have been on impulse but I held back. I did good because I love this yarn.
Sewing

I have not sewn anything by machine in a very long while. I went into shock at Joann's Fabrics last week at how much patterns are these days. There always seems to be a sale though. The other thing I noticed was how thin the pattern books were and how few books there were. There just aren't that many patterns to choose from. I guest there isn't a market for loads of patterns anymore but it sure seems like it. Seems like everyone is sewing. Hmmm...

I like these two patterns and would purchase them in case I begin sewing this year. Very simple and easy pieces. I'm not crazy about the gray pants though. Nope.
I only read 10 books last year. It was a busy year for me. Playing it safe I signed into the Goodreads challenge for only 8 books. Things have shifted positively for my life recently and if all goes well (and it will) I could actually read triple the 8 books because I will have more time to read. I will continue to play it safe through and log in much less than I can actually read. I hate writing plans and numbers down then failing. I don't mind being a chicken about it. You can laugh now.

I have decided to make my first project of 2020 a crochet project. In terms of needlework the crochet hook came first for me as a teen while knitting came much later. I was pretty good at it too. I made mostly scarves, hats and vests but it was easy. Now I'm a bit crochet-insecure so I don't see too many crochet projects in my future but I will give it a try. My gauge tends to be wonky (I think so anyway). I found the cutest little hat for one of my grands that I started this morning. I just have to to-do some top stitching then I'll post it. It's sooo cute !

I don't know why but I am really excited about going into 2020. I have so many thoughts and plans on how I'd like the year to be and how to execute the plans. I recently went through 8 weeks of physical therapy and man did that make a difference. I had a great therapist whose enthusiasm carried over to me. I am no longer afraid of the surgery I had and I will not let it limit me anymore. In terms of knitting or should I say crafting I want to craft all of the things ! I want to start sewing again and coloring and crocheting and.... You get the point.

I've been ordering and picking up coloring books, puzzles and little crafty kits for months now in anticipation of the new year. This photo only shows a few of my purchases. these are small things to bring me extra happiness !

Planners

2020 is in a day or so and I have not decided on a planner yet. I don't usually have an official planner. Well I may purchase a small planner but it's never used as a planner but more like a book of budgets and lists that I refer back to when I need it. A few of the Knitting podcasters that I watch are using planners for their knitting prom so I'm jumping on the band wagon. I won't be combining my knitting and crafting notes with my life notes though so separate planners it will be.

A lot of knitters/crafters use the Travelers planners.

Joann Fabrics has big, thick beautiful planners. They were 50% off last week but I honestly could not figure which one would work for me. They had loads of stickers for them. I see people using the stickers but I'm not really feeling them. I can just put a star or a big check mark next to what I've accomplished. That is what I usually do.

This planner can be bought online. It's pretty but mine must be a three-ring binder. I like the idea of being able to add or subtract my items.

I actually completed all of the projects that I tackled in 2019. Yes I completed them but posting them is a different story. Question. If an item such as a sweater to be blocked over again that sweater is still considered finished right ?

The biggest holiday of the year is over ! Now we can all relax for a while. I had some cooking to do on Christmas but not a lot. I was able to relax and enjoy myself. How did your day go ?

I did fairly well with getting all of my gifts completed. I made eight items total and was able to pull an extra gift (the cabled cowl) from last year to give away. I made 6 hats a pair of fingerless gloves and this cable scarf for my doctor. It was not hard at all but took up a lot of my knitting time because it was just shy of 70 inches. He was touched and loved the scarf though. I started my gift knitting July 14, 2019 and if all goes as planned I'd like to begin making gifts in April, 2020. That way I can take more time to make better quality gifts. It would have been nice to make cowls to go with the hats or to make a couple of fair-isle items such as hats or mittens. I'm hoping my 2020 would not be as hectic as 2019. Did you make gifts ? When did you begin and were you able to complete them in time ? Do you have plans for 2020 to make gifts for family and friends ?
